The last talk of the 2018-19 Lunchbox Lecture series will feature speaker Gary Kass presenting “Korea: The Forgotten War” on Thursday, April 11, at noon in the Murray County Fairgrounds 4-H building. Participants are welcome to bring their lunch, but table space may be limited due to the popularity of the topic. The cost is $3.00 and MC Historical Society members and all veterans are free. Kass has taken and prepared oral histories from eight local Korea War veterans to help put a personal face on a war that America forgot. His presentation will feature their stories against a backdrop of the general history of the war. Featured in the talk will be the experiences of Rueben Anderson, Paul Beech, Ken Borgstahl, Dean Bundy, Alvin Hoffbeck, Richard Lanners, Delwin Moore, and Charles Toner. All military veterans are especially invited to attend.
The war on the Korean peninsula began June 25, 1950 between the North Korean People’s Army backed by China and Russia and the Republic of South Korea supported by the United States. A month later President Harry Truman sent troops to support South Korea. It was the first military action and proxy war of the Cold War. Three years later the war came to an end. Five million civilians and soldiers were killed on both sides. No peace treaty was ever signed, and the area remains in a “frozen conflict.” The story of the war has been overshadowed by World War II and the Vietnam War. The Murray County Historical Society is pleased to host this event to honor the forgotten warriors.
