1933 – Shirley Langland – 2017

    Shirley Langland was born to Charles and Alice (Okins) Newton on January 24, 1933, in Spokane, Washington. Shirley was a registered nurse. She was the first Public School Nurse hired by the Pequot Lakes School working there for 23 years. She also served as Director of Nursing for the Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Society and the Pequot Lakes Nutrition Site. Shirley was active in her community and church serving on many different boards and committees including Community Education, Crow Wing County Health Board, Interfaith Caregivers, American Legion Auxiliary, Habitat for Humanity, United Methodist Women serving as President and Vice President, Grace United Methodist Choir Director and Organist. While living in Montrose, Colorado, she served on the Montrose Library Board and was very active in the Montrose United Methodist Church. Shirley had an amazing bubbly personality and had a very strong faith. Shirley, passed away Friday, June 16, 2017, at Heritage House, Pequot Lakes, Minnesota at the age of 84. We will all miss her beautiful smile, contagious laugh and warm hugs.

Shirley is survived by her children: Laura Hofius (Larry), Charles Langland (Suzie), Mary Ann Lewandowski (John); grandchildren: Dee Maki (Adam), Matthew Langland, Carly Langland, Alyssa Lund (Zachary), Sheelah Lewandowski; great grandchildren: Taylor Maki, Taryn Maki and Ryan Langland; former daughter-in-law, Mary Langland; many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Donald; grandson Lukas Lewandowski; and sister Sylvia Lou Shepherd.

The family would like to say a special thanks to Dr. Julie Olson, nurse Angie, the staff at Heritage House and Essentia St. Joseph’s Medical Center for their wonderful care of Shirley. A Memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, at The Journey Church, Nisswa. Visitation will be Friday, July 21 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Kline Funeral Home, Pequot Lakes and one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 24, at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Camp Ripley. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Interfaith Caregivers. Arrangements are with Kline Funeral Home, Pequot Lakes.
