1931 – Ruth DuBois Green – 2019
Ruth Green was born on August 29, 1931 in Macomb, Illinois to Myron and Bessie Lovell Toland. In 1934 the family moved to Amboy, Minnesota until 1949 when they moved to Lake Crystal, Minnesota for a year. Ruth graduated from Lake Crystal High School in 1949. She then attended Mankato Teachers College and later Mankato State University. On August 30, 1952 she and Sidney Green were married at the Lake Crystal Presbyterian Church. Following their marriage they farmed near Lake Crystal until 1955 when they moved to Madelia, Minnesota and in 1960 they moved to Slayton, Minnesota. Ruth taught fifth grade at Murray County Central until her retirement in 1993. In 1986 Ruth was named Teacher of the Year. Sidney passed away on June 7, 1993. Ruth remained in her home until November 2018 when she moved to Our House Hospice Home in Slayton where she passed away on June 4, 2019 at the age of 87. She was an active member of the Slayton Presbyterian Church serving as Elder, Librarian, Sunday School teacher, Ladies Aid, sang in the choir, and was a substitute pianist. Ruth was a member of the Monday Morning Hand-quilters, Peace Makers Quilt Club, Murray County Historical Society, and Library Book Club. Ruth enjoyed quilting, reading, painting, genealogy, and historical research.
Survivors include her two sons and their spouses: Craig and Kathryn Green, Rocklin, CA, and Jim and Nancy Green, Madison, WI; three grandchildren and one great-grandson and one brother Newton Toland and his wife Mary Ann, Winnebago, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Sidney and infant brother, Grant Toland.
Memorial services will be held at the Slayton Presbyterian Church in Slayton, MN on Friday, June 21 2019 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Dave Hollis officiating. The organist is Nola AAnenson with special music by Krista Keller. Interment will be at Basey Cemetery in Amboy, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday.
