The MCC Rebels opened the girls basketball season against the Windom Area Eagles on Monday night. The Rebels have not had much luck against the Eagles and have had some pretty dismal shooting performances against the non-conference opponent the last few years. Each year is a new year and the Rebels were hoping to go into Windom and come away with a win against the inexperienced Eagles.
MCC has never shot the ball that well against Windom especially in recent history. That did not change on Monday night as the Rebels made just 28% of their shots but when you get off 75 you score some points. The Rebels used a great deal of full-court pressure against the Eagles and it was very effective in the first half because the Rebels were scoring points allowing the team to set their defense. MCC was aggressive and they were looking to score. Windom took the early lead by five points from Maurissa Isaacs and Autumn Hauge. Hauge scored 3 early and then Isaacs started hitting from the outside. The duo combined for 26 first-half points but the rest of their team scored 12. The Rebels got going behind Chelby Christiansen who made a pair of three-pointers early in the half and the Rebels got more aggressive looking for the open shots. Montana Beckmann hit three three-pointers in the first half combined with several drives to the basket allowing the MCC junior to score 16 first-half points. MCC forced 12 first-half turnovers and though they turned the ball over 14 times themselves MCC had the tempo where they wanted it. Rachel Van Iperen was solid for the Rebels scoring 8 first-half points but her 12 rebounds were key due to the Eagles being the bigger team inside. MCC outscored the Eagles in the first half 42 to 38.
