Murray County Central to hold public meeting

The Murray County Central school district has a launched project that, should voters approve in a referendum this August, will make way for the addition of a new practice gymnasium/community center addition to its existing building.  What has for many years been a wish and now a necessity, the gymnasium would fill the district’s educational and extracurricular and community needs.

Currently space is at a premium, Superintendent Joe Meyer explains, noting that some physical education and health classes are being taught in the hallways adjacent to the gym. Having an additional practice area would alleviate those issues as well as result in more effective practice schedules for boys’ and girls’ extracurricular activities.

“Some days our kids start practice at 6:00 a.m.,” Meyer says, adding, “Some team practices last as late as 9:00 p.m. because of the lack of practice space.  That is not the best environment for kids.”

The school board has been contemplating such a project for some time but only recently completed the purchase of land adjacent to the south side of the school building from the County.  “By law the land needed to be purchased first before we could move forward with a public vote,” the superintendent explains. The land purchase has been completed with the contingency that should a bond not be approved by voters then the agreement will be rendered null and void.
