It was more than 50 years ago that work begun in a farm field on the east side of the city of Slayton in Murray County on a nursing home that would provide for those in need of long-term care. One of today’s resident’s at the nursing home, now called Golden Living Center, Edna Voss, grew up north of Hadley but clearly remembers when the parcel of land where the nursing home now sits was all pasture. “I recall that Nurse Krumm (Dorothy) and Dr. Pierson were instrumental in getting this built,” she said recently. Edna and a group of residents were in the dining room having a treat after playing a rousing game of BINGO where the word was shouted frequently and with much enthusiasm.
Edna, by the way, was a volunteer at the nursing home for many years before she moved to the facility. Activities Director Michelle Steffl recalls the mending Edna did and the many hours she spent visiting people. A woman who no longer sees can still ‘read’ her daily devotions by listening to Edna read passages from the Bible.
