Life can be sweet and savory, and sometimes a little bittersweet. What matters most are the smallest acts of kindness that are shown to others, and of course, gratitude for that thoughtfulness.

Years back, local matriarch Alice Rosengren embarked on a new hobby: candy making. It didn’t take long for her to perfect the process of creating delicious anise candy bits – and the art of sharing with others. Bank tellers, librarians, store clerks and service station attendants among many others all received a tasty token of love from Alice, the candy maker, every year as Christmas time came around.

Wherever she went it seemed she had more than enough candy to give to the delight of the receivers.

“Without sharing it’s no good making it,” Alice relates, thinking back to those days with fondness. “I would always end up with some, but most of the time more was given away.” You do that, she says, and you begin to think that the world’s a good place.
