KEELEY ISLAND — A call for people interested in working to protect Shetek area lakes has sparked some interest. An audience of around 25 people gathered to attend an informational meeting held Saturday at the Shetek Lutheran Bible Camp.
Organizers like Dan Schak and Lars Johansson said the turnout was just what they were hoping for — enough people to form a committee with and spread the word about the group’s mission.
A group of area residents including Lars and Lena Johansson, Dan Schak, Jon Joyme, and Jamie Thomazin, have been talking about forming a multi-lake association to help address problems caused by this summer’s flooding and to prevent similar problems in the future.
Group members said flooding poses a threat to homes and businesses
Lars Johansson said a possible option to prevent future flooding on Lake Shetek and nearby lakes would be building structures like dry dams, or water retention areas or wetlands to slow the flow of stormwater into the lakes and other bodies of water in the watershed.
“We are talking water controls all around the lake,” Johansson said.
