Labor Day is here and we are still mowing the grass. The season is changing and fall will officially be here in September. It’s a fun, brisk time with its urgent needs to gather the harvest and prepare for winter. The hunting-gathering time of year. It is a great time.
The monarchs have been very numerous as they congregate for migration. It was good to see a noticeable increase in numbers and having raised a few on our milkweeds there is a little pride. You and I can change the world. This is also the year of the toad. I have seen a lot of them when mowing. Big ones and a lot of small ones. Given half a chance they will get out of the way and they do herd well. Those bug-eating creatures can have all the mosquitoes they want. The little ones are hard to see but they do move about three feet in front of the mower. They are a welcome addition to my yard. Usually, have a few toad houses tucked under bushes around the yard. They are mostly clay flower pots that are broke on the rim. Turned upside down they provide a sheltered cool, damp, dark spot to there liking.

My Old Aunt says –
“If you want a shoulder to cry on,
Pull off to the side of the road.”

Back in my hippie college days, a professor came up to me in the cafeteria and asked me, “Ya dig?”
I thought to myself, this guy’s pretty far out. I answered, “Yeh, man. I dig!”
That’s how I got hoodwinked into joining his archaeological expedition.
