Dusty and Cheryl Thompson have become very fond of Slayton. The food business is not new to them. They have involved in a variety food venues including supper club and golf courses for approximately 40 years prior to making the move from Mason City, Iowa to Minnesota.
Cheryl originally grew up in Currie. When the Log Cabin closed, she and Dusty were approached by Currie State Bank, if they would be interested in bringing their food knowledge to Dovray and open the Log Cabin for a year. One year turned into five years for Dusty, Cheryl, their son, Jay and his girlfriend. Dusty and Cheryl were ready to retire but due to declining health of Jay’s girlfriend they stuck around to help take of the couple’s boys.
Dusty and Cheryl purchased the Country Host in Slayton (located at the corner of Highway 30 and 59) in November 2016. Their design was to operate the establishment until Jay could take it over managing. “It was always our idea Jay would operate the business,” shared Dusty. The time has come for Dusty and Cheryl to transition from chiefs to helpmates. “We will still help Jay, however will be transitioning to more of a retirement status over the next six months or so.”
The food business is nothing new for Jay either. “He’s been helping us since he was fourteen years old,” shared Dusty.
The operation closed recently for a week as the interior took on a new paint color, blinds were removed along cleaning and some other maintenance done. During this time frame, Dusty and Cheryl along with Jay decided when it re-opened the name would be changed as well. The business is formerly known as The Country Host now boasts a sign of JD’s Diner.
