The week started on the high note for the Buttermakers but ended on the downside in a surprising loss. Here is a recap of the weeks action.
Wednesday, July 5th @ Milroy
With two weeks left in the season, Hadley is in a battle with Milroy, Luverne and Pipestone for top spot in the Gopher League standings. All four teams are tied in the loss column and the night’s action would be a big factor towards seeing which team will end up on top at season’s end. Wednesday’s game proved that each team was prepared for this “big” game as the excitement and tensions filled the ballpark. Sam Erickson was given the assignment to shut down the Irish bats.
Hadley got on the board right away in the first inning. With one out, Derek Lieser doubled and moved to third on a single by Nick Bruning. Bruning moved up a base on an infield ground by Max Zwart as Lieser was unable to move off third. A passed ball followed and Lieser raced home for the first score. Milroy tied the game in the second inning when they collected two hits and a runner scored on a fielder’s choice.
Milroy looked liked they would vault into the lead in the fourth when they put runners on second and third with one out. Sam Erickson was able to coax a short fly ball out to right and a ground out to get out of the inning with the game still tied.
Hadley loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth. Derek Lieser stepped up to the plate and hit a fly ball over the center fielders head and raced to third for a bases clearing triple. Milroy came back to score two runs in their half of the inning on a two-run homer that cut Hadley’s lead to 4-3.
