Pierson and Hamman earn medalist honors
It was a beautiful day to be on the links at GreatLife in Worthington. Monday concluded the second round of play in determining those who qualify for state competition.
The section meet was originally scheduled for Wednesday, May 29th, however, due to the deluge of water Worthington had received throughout the week, it was decided to postpone the meet til Friday, May 31st. Unfortunately, another shot of rain kept the course soggy. Play resumed on Monday with the top four teams from the previous round advancing along with the top 10 individuals.
The Murray County Central girls held a commanding 25 stroke lead coming into day two of the tournament. The girls totaled 402 on the second round to couple with their 407 on the first day for a tourney total of 809 – well ahead of the rest. Adrian finished with 861 strokes, followed by Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s 903 and Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda at 905.
Abby Hamman, junior, earned medalist honors on the girls’ side. Hamman fired an 82 which tallied with the 81 from the day one carded her a 163. Hamman finished seventh overall in last year’s state Class A girls’ standings.
“I had a pretty average day,” commented Hamman. “Nothing was really good or really bad.” Putting on holes 7, 9, and 18 seemed to be her only downfall on the day. “I wanted to win individually and also as a team,” she said. “I like the competition at state and it’s my favorite tournament of the season so I’m excited to go back with the team…and hopefully finish better than I did last year.”
