Pulling away impressively early in the second mile, Murray County Central / Fulda sophomore Morgan Gehl cruised to her third consecutive Section 3A individual championship at Luverne last Thursday, October 25.
Gehl was challenged early by Luverne freshman Tenley Nelson, who led the Cardinals to their fourth straight team championship. Once Gehl was able to break loose, she stretched the distance between her and Nelson — who ran well ahead of Canby / Minneota freshman Grace Drietz, who was way ahead of everyone else in the 123-finisher field.
Gehl ran the 5,000-meter distance (3.11 miles) in an incredible time of 17:48 flat as she entered the finish chute just over 30 seconds before Nelson (18:18.2) and over a minute ahead of Drietz (18:56.7).
Luverne sophomore Regan Feit claimed the more competitive race for fourth with her time of 19:55.8, while a pair of runners from Lac qui Parle Valley / Dawson-Boyd finished fifth (20:04.8) and sixth (20:08.6).
