WWII Pilot
By Larry Dahl

John Shoeman is a 93 year old resident of Golden Living Center in Slayton. He still has vivid memories of his military experience during World War II.

Since childhood, John had wanted to be a pilot, and he did have a pilots license before joining the Army Air Corps. He enlisted in the Air Corps in July of 1942, but was not called up for active duty until January, 1943.

He went through classification training in Georgia to determine if he would be a pilot, a gunner, or a bombardier. He was selected to be trained as a pilot.

After training, John was sent to England as a C-47 Cargo plane pilot. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, he pulled glider planes and dropped paratroopers into France to fight the German forces. The U.S. and our Allies did not lose many planes on D-Day.
