Back then when we drove it,  the route was a narrow gravel road, heavily traversed by semi-tractor rigs and other brave souls, of which my family was one.
Have  you ever set off on a grand adventure?   It's a sure way to produce instant memories that will last a lifetime.  When I was about twelve years old my family undertook an endeavor that, now that I look  back on it, I realize was of epic proportions.  

My parents bundled up the family of six and pointed the Chrysler sedan and small Forester camper trailer northward. Destination:  Alaska.  At that time, and most likely is still today, the only connection between the lower fifty states and the Alaskan frontier was via the rugged ALCAN highway.  Legendary over many decades for being a rough, challenging drive, the highway is now paved over its entire length.
