Four state trails that have been converted from railroad lines are featured in the March-April issue of Minnesota Conservation Volunteer magazine. These rails-to-trails bikeways are the Central Lakes, Paul Bunyan, Casey Jones, and Sakatah Singing Hills state trails.
Rails-to-trails conversions are an important part of the state trail system, making up 560 of the 620 miles of paved multiuse trails managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Bicyclists comprise more than two-thirds of the travelers on multiuse trails.
