The city council Monday night approved the final levy for 2013, with no changes from the preliminary budget set earlier this year, reflecting a 6.61% increase. The general fund property tax levy was set at $647,048 with the total levy including the bond funding amounting to $808,338.
Attending the final budget hearing were two concerned citizens who questioned the increases on their properties. Helen Vogel voiced concerns that her property at 3232 29th Street said that her property taxes had increased 33.8 % last year, and Art Reinsma noted that his son's land on Maple Avenue had also been assessed at a higher rate than he felt necessary.
The council addressed both questions and Mayor Miron Carney explained that last year the state legistature abolished the homestead market credit that had previously been in place. "This was the political solution the legislature used and that is what constituted the tremendous spike last year," Carney said.
