A day set aside for giving thanks

Sarah Josepha Hale. Perhaps you know this woman's name. Even if you don't, you will probably know some portion of the poem which became the nursery rhyme that she is famous for...Mary Had a Little Lamb, originally entitled Mary's Lamb.

What does Sarah Josepha Hale have to do with thoughts of Thanksgiving? She was the woman who believed, during the years leading up to our country's Civil War, that a day set aside for giving thanks would help to infuse hope and belief in the nation and the constitution. Hale spent many years promoting the idea of a Thanksgiving holiday.
