“Good morning. Avoca Post office, Mary Galles speaking, how may I help you?” That’s the phrase usually heard by many that walk through the door at the Avoca Post Office. Tuesday, July 31st will mark Galles’ last day. After 34 years. Galles will retire her position as the long time Postmaster in Avoca.
She started her career at the Avoca Post Office in 1978 where Galles began as a clerk and learned the ropes from Bob Somers, who was the Postmaster at the time Galles was hired. After working as a clerk for six years, she was promoted to Postmaster in 1984 and has been in that position ever since.
Galles spent her childhood growing up in Avoca just a couple blocks down from where the Post Office stands today. When she had the opportunity to start working for the Post Office, Galles mentioned that Avoca was the only place she wanted to work.
