By: Miron Carney, Staff Writer

Over the road time record
It was mid November 1927 when Gordon Bennett and Don McNamara departed from Slayton leaving a trail of dust and flying snow with 900 miles of road ahead of them. Distance was only part of the men’s epic. Time was their foe to conquer. With Bennett’s Chrysler “72” as their weapon, they hoped to span the distance from Minneapolis to Detroit setting a new time record for auto travel between the two cities.

They left Minneapolis on a Thursday afternoon, November 17, at 3:15. With the Chrysler purring smoothly, they reached Chicago for a breakfast at 4:00 Friday morning. After briefly resting, they continued on to Detroit.

By 3:45 Friday afternoon, the travelers rolled into Detroit and had a 24 hour average just shy of 38 miles per hour. The men enjoyed a well needed rest.
