Although the festivities may not have happened as planned, the excess water didn’t dampen the spirits of the Currie community.
With Tuesday’s excess rain, organizers of the Currie annual Fourth of July celebration were forced to cancel the July 3rd street dance. “This was disappointing,” expressed Shari Thomas, “but we felt the safety of people was much more important than having the dance.” The crew is trying to solitify a date in the near future for the street dance.
Then on Wednesday, with rising waters forcing road closures in every direction entering the small town of Currie, organizers opted to postpone their annual Fourth of July activities to Saturday, the 7th. “In all the years I’ve either attended or been a part of the planning, we’ve never had to postpone the event,” says Thomas. “We’ve had rain showers, but not torrential rains with no travel advised.”
Despite the delay in the activities, Thomas feels the day went well. “We had good attendance for the community picnic and I believe everyone had a good time.” She did mention the annual softball tournament was lacking enough interest to hold the event, however, the planning committee is looking at other options for next year’s event.
