Courts building receiving a facelift

If you have made a trip to the courts building recently, you may have encountered a bit of a maze. The location is undergoing construction in part due to the Courthouse Security Grant the county was awarded in 2018.

The project went through a bid process this last fall. On November 29th, 2018 the low proposal, submitted by Sussner Construction of Marshall was awarded the project with their bid of $285,100.

According to Christy Riley, Murray County Community Relations Coordinator, the grant money received will cover some of the construction costs, but the majority of the expense is being paid out of the county building upgrades account. She said this project has been in the works for four years and thus was budgeted for. “It is a big project and is being done to create a better flow throughout the building,” shared Riley. “The grant money just made it more of a priority now.”

A lot of time and planning went into the new design of building said Riley. Many revisions of the design were done before the job was actually bid out. She explained one of the biggest changes was to the law library. Originally for every new law a new book was created. Now, according to Riley, most everything is online. This in itself, opens up quite a bit of space in the building. Instead of entering the east doors and heading due west towards the former courts admin, the new law library is located just inside those doors to the north. Probation will also have their own space and will be located just north of the law library.
