Following the conclusion of the winter sports season, the MCC student council was looking host yet another successful Coaches vs Cancer event. On the brink of winter storm, the event athletes were ready for this fun-filled, rule-free game of basketball. While the competition can be entertaining, everyone left the gym that night feeling like they’d taken another win from cancer.
The MCC pep band was joined by members of the Slayton Community Band, heralding the entrances of both the staff and students teams.
Following the team introductions, the game tipped off. It was a fairly consistent back and forth between the two teams, commanded mostly by the staff team. Each team was coached by players from the boys and girls basketball teams. The girls coached the staff and the boys coached the students.
Halftime saw a multitude of happenings. Girls donated hair to Locks of Love to create wigs for cancer patients. Local stylists Cheryl Carney (Slayton Beauty Shop), Renee Giese (Corner Salon), and Sheila Kuball (Corner Salon) were on hand to help with the donation cuts. There were also a great plenty of money awarded to the Murray County Relay for Life by various groups and organizations throughout the community (totals at end).
The staff lead at halftime, at the end of which each team had an opportunity to make an attempt at a half court shot worth 20 points before commencing the game’s second half. There was no basket made.
