Buttermakers take care of Cubs to advance in playoff action

The Hadley Buttermakers opened the Region 13C baseball playoffs as the Number 2 seed from the Gopher League as they faced the Number 7 seed from the First Nite League, Worthington Cubs in a best two of three series. Hadley passed their first test in securing another State Baseball berth as they dispatched the Cubs in 2 games. Here is the series recap

Wednesday

Hadley began the series on the road as they traveled to Worthington for Game 1. Luke Drooger was given the night’s starting duty for Hadley. Luke is coming back from an arm injury and working to build up his arm strength in innings pitched and working on a pitch count limit.

Joe Larson led off the game in the first inning with a double. Joe came around later in the inning to score on a Cub pitcher wild pitch for a 1-0 lead. Luke Drooger shut down the Cubs in order as the game moved to the second inning. Hadley would add to their lead. Chris Halbur led off by reaching base after getting hit by a pitch. Trent Carlson followed with working out a walk. Eric Wieneke put down a successful sacrifice bunt to move the runners up a base. Derek Platt singled to score Halbur and Joe Larson walked to load the bases. Trent Carlson then scored on a passed ball. Derek Lieser popped out for the second out. Nick Bruning walked to reload the bases. The Cub starter would wild pitch to bring in Derek Platt. Blake Rogers hit a ground ball to short that was booted and kept the bases loaded with Buttermakers. Max Zwart was hit by a pitch to bring in Joe Larson. Chris Halbur struck out with the bases loaded for the final out with Hadley up 5-0.
