Are you ready to fly?

Remember that beginning on October 1, 2020 you will not be able to fly within the U.S. or enter Federal Facilities using a Standard Minnesota ID or Driver’s License for identification.

Before you fly, if you want to use your MN ID/Driver’s License to fly you must upgrade to a Real or Enhanced. A Real ID will allow you to fly within the U.S. The Enhanced ID will allow you to fly within the U.S. and go into Canada or Mexico but only by land or water. You will still need a passport to fly anywhere outside of the United States.

What do I need to do?

Go to drive.mn.gov or stop by the License Center in Slayton to get a list of all the documents that are acceptable to get your new license. You must bring in documents that prove your name, date of birth, social security number and address.

Be sure all your documents have your given name on them. If your name is James, all of your documents need to say James, they cannot say Jim.

Do I have to change my ID or Driver’s License?

No, if you don’t travel on airplanes or enter Federal Facilities such as a military base or nuclear power plant.

No, if you have a valid passport or passport card to fly with instead.

Yes, if you plan on flying and do not have a passport or passport card.

If my ID/Driver’s License doesn’t expire until 2022, can I upgrade before it expires?

YES
