Frigid temperatures gripped the area throughout this past holiday weekend. The highs never reached above zero while double-digit lows dipped to -22° on New Year’s Day with windchills marking -45°. The cold weather found many opting to stay home on New Year’s Eve instead of venturing out, however, there were still those brave soles who opted for an evening of fun.
The bitter cold temps were enough to make Gov. Mark Dayton issued an executive order to provide emergency relief from regulations incorporated in Minnesota Statues pertaining to hours of service for motor carriers and drivers providing direct assistance in emergency relief efforts. This action will help address an increased need for propane heating across Minnesota.
This past weekend had the upper Midwest facing cold temperatures and is expected to stick around for the next seven to 10 days. The executive order will help increase the supply of propane to heat more than 200,000 homes, 3,300 hog and 3,746 poultry operations, and other farms and businesses across the state.
The weather is trending towards warmth as Saturday is expecting to reach a high of 19° above zero.
There is some good that has come from the recent deep freeze, area lakes have now formed several inches of good ice and fishing has been reported as very good.
