Phillip Uttech, a former resident of Fulda who now lives in the Twin Cities, recently talked about his experience as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.  The work was done in Charleston, South Carolina.

Uttech has worked on a few local projects in the past for Habitat for Humanity.  He learned about the trip to South Carolina through a fellow freelance Lighting Designer from Minneapolis. Uttech and his friend were connected with an organization called Global Village. The organization is an affiliate that helps to organize Habitat for Humanity volunteer trips.

Uttech said, “Normally it would probably take anywhere from 6 to 12 months to plan for a trip like this. Money needs to be raised to go, plans have to be made. But this trip had an interesting story.  It was the second try for most of this group.  The first time they went the group was chased out of South Carolina by a hurricane!  That was last October. When they decided to try the trip again for anyone of the previous trip, they added a few additional spots.  I was lucky enough to get one of those.”

Volunteers raise funds to travel for a Habitat for Humanity experience. “Habitat for Humanity sets a goal for us to raise that covers building materials, most food, and transportation once we are down there. We were in Charleston from June 18th  through June 24th,” Uttech explained.
