The face of the Slayton Public Library is changing with the recent retirement of veteran director Sharyl Larson, who was at the helm of the library for nearly 40 years. Stepping into her place is Lori Steiner, who for the past two years has served as assistant librarian for the Slayton library. Stainer has also worked for the Fulda Memorial Library and the Plum Creek Library System bookmobile, so is no stranger to the realm of library service.
Joining the new director as assistant librarian, is Trish Grieme, who began work a scant few weeks ago, says that she already knows that she is going to love the new position. Grieme admits that she hadn’t planned on leaving her job of 18 years as paraprofessional at the local school, but felt compelled to pursue the possibility when she learned of the position opening.
“I have a passion for kids and books,” she says. “And I knew I just had to take it when I got the offer.” Admittedly a people person, Grieme says that she enjoys visiting with and helping patrons who visit the library. “I like to talk,” she says with a laugh.
Leaving her position as teacher’s aide was undeniably difficult for her, she says. In fact prior to that she wrote a letter to the families of the students that she has associated with at the school thanking them for sharing their kids with her. Grieme will continue to work with children and adults in her new job at the library.
