1927 – Ella DeVries – 2017
Ella DeVries, the daughter of Lloyd and Ida (Klock) Lathrop, was born on August 21, 1927 in Turlara, South Dakota. When she was eight years old they moved to Arco, Minnesota where she received her education. She worked as a waitress when she was older. Ella was united in marriage to Virgil DeVries on December 15, 1945 in Marshall, Minnesota and together they raised four children. In 1951 they moved to Slayton, Minnesota and owned and operated DeVries Sanitation. Ella also worked at the Slayton Schools in the food service department. She retired in 1990 and they moved to acreage near Avoca, Minnesota. Virgil Passed away in May of 1993 and in 1994 she returned to Slayton. In August of 2016 Ella moved to the Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall, Minnesota and passed away on Friday, February 3, 2017 at the age of 89. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, auctions and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include her two children: Randy (Anne) DeVries, Marshall, MN and Nancy DeVries, Worthington, MN; six grandchildren: Dawn DeVries, Kasey (Shane) Baker, Corey (Jamie) DeVries, Bobbi Jo DeVries, Ben (Jacinta) DeVries, Billy Joe (Amanda) DeVries; nine great-grandchildren and two sisters-in-law: Elenora (Brandt) Pope and Beverly Lathrop. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; twin sons: Larry and Gary; granddaughter Londa; three sisters: Viola, Laura and Hazel and brother Bud.
Funeral services will be at the Totzke Funeral Home Slayton, MN at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 9, 2017 with Dave Erickson officiating. The pallbearers are Randy DeVries, Nancy DeVries, Bobbi Jo DeVries, Billy Joe DeVries, Ben DeVries and Corey DeVries. Interment at Slayton Memorial Gardens Slayton, MN.
