Margaret Slinger was born and raised in the Woodstock, Minnesota area. Her parents, Henry and Elizabeth Slinger, were farmers and their children learned at an early age that work was an every-day part of their lives. So much so that for Margaret work was what one did. There was nothing unusual about that.

Margaret will celebrate her 93rd birthday in July and thought it was time she stepped down from the job she has held at the Murray County Government Center for more than 23 years. The ‘more than’ comes into play because she worked at the Murray County Government Center though the SMOC program for a number of years before becoming an employee of the County for the last 23 years. The Southwestern Minnesota Opportunity Council, Inc. is a non-profit community action agency that helps families.

“It won’t officially be 23 years until the first of February,” Margaret explained recently. “But, a big part of the reason I wanted to stop now was the weather we’re having. It’s cold!” She doesn’t care for snow covered roads either! But, people like deputy auditor LaDean Lange have helped her get to work even with snow packed roads. “LaDean would pick me up I needed a ride,” she explained.
